Practical Success

Business people talk a lot about 'success' and what they will do when they have achieved
certain goals.
In this month's column, we will transcend the general, mundane tools for creating
success and learn a technique for living in a mental/emotional state of 'assumed
success.' When people are not getting what they say they want, or not getting it
as quickly as they would like, it is often because their focus of attention is off
target.
What we focus on is what we experience. When you set a goal or state a desire, what
you are often unconsciously focusing on is the fact that you do not yet have it.
When the focus is on ''not having,' that continues to be your experience. The technique
described below will help you to firmly shift and hold your focus on 'assuming' the
desired outcome.
To use this technique, you must first know what it is you want. For the purpose of
this exercise, choose a goal from any area of your life, business or personal.
Once you have a clear goal in mind, I will show you how to prepare for the physical
manifestation to be part of your life.
FOR EXAMPLE: Let's say you decide to sell your home and buy another. The first
thing to do is design, in writing, your next home. This should be done in detail,
including anything and everything that is important to you.
You can use the essence of what you want to experience rather than physical descriptions,
when that is appropriate. For example, you can state that you live in safe, quiet
neighborhood without actually knowing the address or even the town. Or you can be
very descriptive, as one of my clients did and know the exact house at a particular
address.
The important point is to let yourself be very aware of what you want, then write
it down. Think of this part of the exercise like ordering something from a mail-order
catalog, or going into a dealership to order a new car.
You must be specific so your request can be fulfilled.
Writing down the information means you don't have to hold any of the important points
in your memory. It also minimizes worry, preoccupation and organizes your thinking.
It also serves as a guide when you actually begin to look at houses.
I had once wanted to live in a house by the water (which water? I did not state clearly)
and surrounded by pine trees. I got what I asked for. My current home has just those
attributes:The huge, beautiful pine trees continually dropped their needles into
my swimming pool! So after I achieved my goal, I got to deal with the consequences
of my success!
This is what we mean by 'watch what you ask for.' That statement means, 'Be very
clear what you are asking for.'
The next step is to assume the desired outcome. That means to act as if you will
have what you want.
Using the home-finding example, you might assume the desired outcome - finding the
home you want - by beginning to sell and throw out things you do not want to pay
to have moved to the new location. By taking those steps you are acting as if your
request is in the process of manifesting; you are assuming the desired outcome.
This is a very powerful process.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE: This time let's suppose the goal is to add another support person
to your staff.
The first step, as always, is to write a description of what you want. This is your
Ideal Employee description, and should be in alignment with your Business Vision
Statement.
Describe the characteristics you prefer in an ideal employee, as if you could be
working with the perfect person for the job. Include that you easily afford their
services, that they love their job, and so on. Don't compromise or hold back; there
are approximately six billion people on the planet and your ideal employee is out
there somewhere.
Next, prepare for their arrival. The job description should be written clearly, so
you can show it to interviewees.
Prepare their workspace, so they can begin work at once. As you are doing this, you
are thinking about this person, how you will be working together, how they will participate
in your office. Be aware of these thoughts and be sure to think 'good,' supportive
thoughts. That is the point - to get what you want and not get what you don't want.
If you are skeptical about this technique, if you think it couldn't possibly work,
try it anyway. Use it with a mind open to the possibility that it may.
Remember: Things are only impossible until they are not. It was impossible
to go to the moon and back until it wasn't It was impossible to run a four-minute
mile until someone did it.
You can have what you say you want, or you can have more of what you already have,
including more lack and limitation. In order to get different results, you must do
things differently. If this technique seems 'different' to you, great!
You prepare for the future by what you think and do today. The force of your thoughts
and actions create a powerful momentum, which results as your future life's experiences
and conditions.
Continue to use the other tools I have presented in this column in past months. While
you are using your powerful mental energies, you are still living in the material
world, too. The other tools - such as Ideal Me, Project Planning, Calendaring and
Time Diary - are also designed to focus your attention on your desired outcome. They,
too, will support easy, rapid accomplishment of your goals.
