Marketing YOU

Some Summer Reading Just for YOU!
By Stan Hustad

Summer is a time for relaxation, reflection, renewal, and for some good reading. The time by the lake or pool, or sitting on the deck in the early evening can be a time to read for relaxation and for a time to learn how to be better at being you and for learning how to better market you.

Recently a client asked me for some summer reading suggestions that might help them get geared up to be better at building their business and marketing themselves in the year ahead. I was able to suggest a few and with your permission may I pass on some of these suggestions to you too!

NAIFA is committed to helping you be a business owner, not just an agent or advisor. One of the best books to help you think this way is the long time business best-seller RICH DAD POOR DAD by Robert Kiyosaki. This book is a story that will share a number of lessons about how to become "rich" and why you need to be a business builder. It also shows you how powerful storytelling can be in getting your message across.

Another great book to help you think differently and learn some of the ways that successful people think is THE MILLIONAIRE MIND by Thomas Stanley. There are all kinds of seminars to teach you how to market to the affluent. Most of them do not have a clue. First you need to learn how successful people think, then what they do, and how you must be like them in order to influence them. This book helps.

If you really want to get serious about being a student of marketing read a classic. Theodore Levitt's THE MARKETING IMAGINATION is an easy to read but very informative overview of what marketing means in terms of you and your business.

If you have not yet read THE EXPERIENCE ECONOMY: Work Is Theatre & Every Business a Stage by Joe Pine and Jim Gilmore you are not yet ready to survive and thrive in the new century. You need to understand how business works today and how you can stop the slow but certain slide into just being a peddler of commodity products.

Instead of being a peddler of products why not be an extraordinary advisor. So read CLIENTS FOR LIFE: Evolving From An Expert For Hire to an Extraordinary Advisor by Jagdish Sheth and Andrew Sobel. Here you will learn the character and professional qualities necessary to be a great counselor and advisor.

Speaking of character, a moving and easy to read is WHEN CHARACTER WAS KING by Peggy Noonan, a columnist for the Wall Street Journal. It is an example of great writing and a loving tribute to Ronald Reagan and the qualities that went into his life and work.

Today all of us in life and in our industry are challenged by the problems of aging. Make a point to read some time in the next year THE FORGETTING – Alzheimer's: Portrait of an Epidemic by David Shenk. It will challenge you to have a better understanding of this disease, to living better yourself, and to being a person of empathy and compassion.

Remember that you will be valued and able to market you because you have greater wisdom, understanding, and compassion. These summer "reads" will help you be a better YOU in order to better Market YOU.
