When it comes to getting the job done - whatever the task is - people seem to
do one of two things: They are excited and creative about it; or they worry and stress
over it.
I don't like to see people stressed. Stress produces demands on the physical body
which are not healthy. I prefer to see people healthy and happy. Therefore this month's
column is a simple guide to getting through the day with ease, no matter what you
have on your calendar.
The first step is to realize that your attitude is a Point of View, and it is up
to you to decide what your attitude is: You can decide "yes, of course I can,"
or you can worry that you can't
I suggest you decide that you can and will get the job done, and moreover, that you
will have fun with it. To help yourself, look at the facts:
What needs to happen? Make a list. It does not have to been in order of priority
- you can do that later. Just list out everything you can think of, no matter how
small, that you need to do. Be creative too. If you are making a presentation, will
color graphics be more interesting than black and white?
Once you have made the to do list, then go back and prioritize the items. If at all
possible, start with the easiest or quickest tasks. You want to mark off the to do
items, as you do them. Marking the items off the list as completed gives a sense
of actual accomplishment.
The sense of accomplishment is motivating. True motivation comes from within; it
cannot be given by another. This is a way to help yourself by motivating yourself
through the successful completion of each task.
Use the resources available to you. Be willing to ask for help.
Last week one of my clients told me he was having "trouble" with his support
staff because they did not want to work as much as he was working. All of a sudden,
he was producing three and four times the insurance applications he had in the past.
(Dear Reader, use the tools in this monthly column - they work!)
He held a staff meeting, and basically said - I am commission only. If I don't serve
people by providing appropriate insurance for them, I don't eat. What can we do as
a team to continue to build our business, even though it means more work for both
of you?
He furthermore suggested a profit-sharing option, and his team went to work with
enthusiasm.
Sometimes, asking for help means giving someone else the opportunity to serve you.
There are many times in life when people are just waiting to be asked, and are very
glad to assist in some way.
Also, please be aware that you may be more "intimidating" to support people
than you realize. When that happens, people tend not to volunteer, but will gladly
assist when asked. Thanking people for their assistance is a must for good relationships.
What to do when you hit a barrier or an obstacle: Go back to Step One. Decide that
you can find a way. Next, look at the facts: What needs to be done, and in what order?
Every problem comes packaged with its own solution. All you have to do is find the
solution! Think of it as a game. All information is available, somewhere. Atoms and
molecules were "available" long before we had the means to "see"
them. Just because you cannot see the answer does not mean it isn't there. You just
need to "look" differently.
There is a famous drawing in which some people see an old woman, some people see
a young woman. When seeing one of the faces in the drawing, it is often difficult
to see the other.
However, once you "know" both faces are there on the page, seeing both
becomes easier.
It is the same with getting the job done. "Know" you can; "know"
the information you need is available, even if that means using your own creative
imagination. Know that you can.
As with the drawing of the women, you FIRST decide that the answer or information
is in front of you - all you have to do is shift your perspective.
Change begins with choice. And the choice is yours. Decide that you can make it easy
and fun, or decide that you have to worry and stress. Whichever choice you make,
you are correct.
Reflect on your accomplishments. As you work through your list, decide to have fun
with it. If you have ten things to do to get the job done, notice you have already
accomplished two. Most people I know, including myself, get some pleasure from marking
off tasks on their to do lists. Enjoy it!
Joy is an inside job. You decide. Are you going to have fun and be creative with
this project, making it the best it can be (for now), or will you stress and worry?
It
is all up to you; It is a Point of View.
